The Sound Of The Quests

The last LP from The Quests before they disbanded. Trasklist included Hawaii Five-O, Don't Forget To Remember, Soul Finger, Time Is Tight, I'd Wait A Million Years, Sound Of Silence, Sunshine Of Your Love, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Love Is Blue, Jesamine, Don't Play That Song (You Lied), Be My Girl. Jap Chong came of age as a vocalist with his fine renditions of Don't Forget To Remember and I'd Wait A Million Years.

This being the last Quests LP released by EMI before The Quests disbanded in 1970 could not help but show that EMI itself did not quite know what to do with the prolific legacy of the band. So the company quickly compiled a batch of Hong Kong recordings, and then, in a state of confusion, they also threw in the first two songs that Keith Locke and The Quests ever recorded. Quite odd, and not very smart of EMI, I have always thought.

Anyway, I really like Jap Chong's rendition of "Don't Forget To Remember." Certainly, the Bee Gees' original record is second to none in the face of all the covers that follow, but The Quests also did a most commendable job projecting the various emotions that come with a sad parting song like this one.

Maybe it's the sad lyrics that tug at my heart. For some reason, I have always regarded this song as a great goodbye love song that is sung at a funeral. Like, when your soulmate dies, and these are your final words of goodbye.

What more bittersweet words than to remind your lover not to forget you now that you are both in two different worlds, so to speak. Yes, the memories of your soulmate will always stay alive in your heart, yet you can't touch him or her anymore. No more hugs, no more tender touches, no more kisses, no more looks of love. Can you even go on by yourself when the yang in your life is gone?

Maybe I'm a hopeless romantic, but this is the kind of songs that will always get to me. And Ah Chong's vocals are especially excellent on this recording, which tells me that even he must have felt some deep pain in his life, or he could not have sung this song the way he did.

This is the song that makes Jap Chong - a childhood hero whom I have never met, a founding member of the greatest pop band in the history of Singapore, a band that I had worshipped in my heart for over 40 years - a real human being to me, and not just an unreachable pop star.

DON'T FORGET TO REMEMBER

Though my heart won't believe that you have left me,
I keep telling myself that it's true.
I can get over anything you want, my love,
But I can't get myself over you.

Don't forget to remember me
And the love that used to be;
I still remember you, I love you.
In my heart lies a memory to tell the stars above,
Don't forget to remember me, my love.

On my wall lies a photograph of you, girl,
Though I try to forget you somehow.
You're the mirror of my soul, so take me out of my hole,
Let me try to go on living right now.

Don't forget to remember me
And the love that used to be;
I still remember you, I love you.
In my heart lies a memory to tell the stars above,
Don't forget to remember me, my love.
