The Checkmates were one of the best R & B groups from the 60s era. Real pity that they recorded only one EP on Philips label. I was told both Reggie Verghese and Vernon Cornelius were associated with this group before they joined The Quests.

This is a good EP. Their version of Mojo which is actually Got My Mojo Working made popular by Mudday Waters is given a steaming treatment. The band really chugs along behind him and there is an exciting part when the drums kick in and then Benny Chan lets go a memorable lick on electric twelve string. The first choice of guitar for an aspiring bluesman. More to come at the end when Bryan lets loose a blood curdling yell.
Siva and James Choy can be heard on backing vocals and for Siva on organ.
